Where To Buy

The gorgeous Lily Cole. Britain’s new ‘national treasure’, famous for her porcelain skin and fiery red hair has catapulted into the beauty spotlight as one of the leading new faces of the year. Only 20 years old, Lily keeps her feet firmly on the ground, focussing on her university education as top priority, despite being in such high demand. We’ve managed to steal her away from the catwalk to talk exclusively about what it takes to be Britain’s favourite beauty icon.

When did your fascination for style begin?
When I was in my teens growing up – raiding my mums wardrobe of dresses and coats, and walking home from school through Portobello Market dreaming up fantasies to be made up in all these strange clothes I saw. There was a diversity and rawness to the trends that wasn’t driven by anything too cynical then.
What make-up trends do you predict will be big in the following year?
Vintage glamour, mixed with understated grooming.
Do you ever struggle to find make-up to suit your unique colouring?
No, I feel blessed that the colour of my hair allows me to wear a lot of colours I might not otherwise get away with. I definitely don't get away so easily with the tanned/bronzed make-up though! I would have to wear a lot of heavy make up to go there and I'd rather keep it light.
How often do you change the style of your make-up?
I stick with a pretty simple and static daily routine. But when going out at night I quite often experiment with new 'looks', depending on what I'm wearing, where I'm going and how I'm feeling.
Do you ever feel like hiding away when a bad hair or make-up day strikes?
No, my hair looks different every time I wake up so I have probably learnt not to worry about it too much. At worst I'll just throw on a hoody.
What parts of your body do you hate/love the most?
I try not to judge my body like that. I am what I am, so I may as well accept and enjoy it, the better and the worse! Most importantly I think you should try and respect your body and try and keep it healthy!
What products help you to keep up to date with beauty styles?
Style – whether in fashion or beauty, means looking great and being comfortable with yourself, and not looking like a slave to a given trend.
Lipstick or lip-gloss?
Lipstick.
Liquid eyeliner or pencil?
Liquid is more impressive, if you can manage to make it straight.
Do you always take your make-up off at the end of the night?
Yes, always!
What’s your favourite lip colour at the moment?
Light brown coffee colour and red - not at the same time.
Which celebs do you find most beautiful?
Can I change that to which stars do I find beautiful? Anna Karina, Vanessa Paradis and Paul Newman. Today’s definition of celebrity implies a lack of integrity.
Do you ever feel that media pressure influences your style?
It probably should do more than it does! I guess being in the industry I am in influences my style.
What advice would you give to young beauty professionals trying to make it in the industry?
Do beauty like it is your art, love whatever creativity you can make in it.
