Where To Buy

Sophie Ellis Bextor is a true modern day style icon, her dynamic take on fashion and dramatic bright lippie are instantly recognisable and so perfect for us to recreate. She is kooky and cool and always manages to stay bang on trend despite juggling being a model, singer, songwriter and a mother. Her next album is due for release later this year and it is guaranteed to be packed full of more fabulous pop and dance tunes.

As the new face of Rimmel we wanted to catch up with her on life, love and lipstick….

What make-up bag must haves are in your bag?
Bright colours really. Anything that sparkles or is bold. I can always rely on black eyeliner, a slick of mascara, red lipstick and a bit of colour on my cheeks – I always use the Rimmel Professional Liquid Eyeliner, it’s been a regular in my make-up bag for years and always does the trick.
What’s your top beauty tip?
A big discovery for me has been individual eyelashes rather than using a full set. I think sometimes a full set can look a bit done up and I end up looking like a dolly. With individual ones you can even put on a couple during the day if you want to – it creates a pretty soft look which accentuates your eyes without looking to OTT.
What’s your favourite album of all time?
There are too many to mention really but listening to blur Parklife and Oasis Definitely Maybe really takes me back to the moment I properly fell in love with music.
What’s your favourite item of clothing?
Definitely dresses. I have a few that have accompanied me on happy occasions. I guess my favourite is still the Moschino dress I wore for my Take Me Home video. It’s just so beautiful, a great shape and has gorgeous jewelled flowers across the front. You feel amazing in it.
What are your predictions for next season's look?
You’re asking the wrong girl! I am rubbish at predicting trends - sorry! I always love using colour however. In the new Rimmel ad I am wearing the most amazing red shade on my lips with barely there make-up – I love it! The next one is all about getting the most sexy, full lashes and although not a look I normally go for, I do really like it…it’s a very soft and pretty look.
What is your favourite era in fashion? (i.e. 60’s, 70’s, 80’s)
I think its 40’s and 50’s. Hourglass shapes and red lipstick and fantastic hair!
What are your favourite fashion brands at the moment?
I guess break the bank is Chanel, high street is H&M and eternally my favourite is a good vintage shop. It’s addictive.
Who are your favourite actor/actresses at the moment and/or of all time?
I guess when I was younger it was someone like Julie Andrews, not only was she Maria in Sound of Music but she was also Mary Poppins – two of my favourite films when I was little – I’d love to meet her one day!
What’s your favourite film/TV programme for fashion/style?
I guess it’d have to be Grease. It was the first film I saw that made me want to emulate the girls. Both Sandy and Rizzo! Since then I love the way that films like Guys and Dolls and West Side Story look.
Who are your heroines who inspires you?
I'm inspired by strong women and find women such as PJ Harvey and Bjork really inspiring as although they may not be seen as typical 'beauty' icons, they really push the boundaries and are not afraid to experiment – their beauty comes from somewhere else.

I also loved Sindy – before she started to look like Barbie. She had this big head and great hair with amazing lips. She’s definitely influenced me along the way. So have the cast of Grease the film, and Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins.
What wouldn’t you leave home without?
It's probably Rimmel Moisture Renew lipstick as it's quite versatile. I think when I was about 16 I realised the importance of lipstick if you are pale like me, as not only do I like colour on my lips but I also use it when I need some health in my cheeks – it makes a great blusher too!
When you want to create a look, what do you start with – make-up, clothes or hair?
Depends how confident I’m feeling! I suppose I start with the frock. Then see how much help I need with everything else!
What advice would you give a tourist in London?
Wow where to start? Take advantage of our galleries, go on an open top tourist bus, don’t go to oxford circus on a Saturday and stroll along Portobello on a Friday.
Which is your favourite street for shopping in London?
Marylebone High Street or around Westbourne Grove. But to be sensible I should leave my credit card at home!
What do you think the coolest part of London is, why?
Probably round East London - Hoxton and Brick Lane. It’s full of very trendy types. Not something I can compete with but good for people watching.
What do you miss when you’re not in London?
My friends and family. London is my home.
Where is your favourite place in the world?
I think a lot of my most happy memories are from Italy. As well as getting married there, there's one little town we often go to on holiday and it's pretty idyllic.
