How to pare back your makeup for summer

The mercury is rising, public transport is getting a bit… sticky, and the last thing you want to do in this summer mugginess is to be piling layers of makeup on your face, only for it to melt straight off again.

That’s where sheer, light textures step in. Warm weather calls for a change up in makeup, and we’ve pulled together the ultimate tips to carry you through the summer months.

First up, go shopping for a new base. You want something that’s going to stay in place all day and even out your skintone, without looking heavy in the bright sunlight. Thankfully Rimmel’s Insta Flawless, £6.99, ticks all these boxes. It’s a skin tint which you can wear alone for a soft, flattering glow, while also acting as a primer for any makeup you wear on top. Plus, it contains SPF15, perfect for protecting your face in those short bursts of sunlight between office and coffee shop.

While #Insta Flawless gives lovely, light coverage, if you have any blemishes or dark circles you want to hide, then Rimmel’s Wake Me Up Concealer, £5.49, keeps you covered while also reinvigorating your skin. Use sparingly over your light base to keep that fresh, radiant look.

While you’re cutting back on your makeup, it helps to pick one feature to focus on and give your face definition. Eyebrows are a major trend at the moment with good reason – well-groomed brows frame and lift your whole face more than you would think possible, plus a brow pencil will stay in place when even a stubborn eyeliner melts in the heat.

Use the brush on Rimmel’s Brow Pencil, £2.99, to tame stray hairs and shape your arch, then draw in light, short strokes to define and darken your brows. If your face is close to the mirror while you’re doing this, we’d advise that you take a step back every few strokes so you can see the effect, and avoid overdoing that colour.

Finish off with a dab of Rimmel’s Brow This Way Highlighter, £4.99, underneath the arch, and blend. If you want to add some more light to your face, then you can swipe the highlighter on the tops of your cheekbones before blending well. The subtle shimmer will catch the light and make you look desirably glowy.
