Bolds aren’t the only nail polish shades to wear in summer. Pastels look fresh and fun against a hot-weather wardrobe – including all of those printed playsuits you own.
And, now, there are new ways to wear muted colours for maximum impact, and we’ve rounded them up. Here are three tricks for nailing pastels that are super easy to do…
Add an accent
Play with pastels by adding an accent nail on one or two fingers. It’s simple but eye-catching, and looks even better when you add a ring to the contrasting digits.
Start with a nude nail polish like Rimmel London Kate 15 Super Gel Nail Polish in Boho-Licious, £5.99) – then add a pop of pastel on one or two nails. This works best on your index, ring or pinky finger, and with a colour with the same warm undertones as your second colour. Rimmel London’s Super Gel Nail Polish in Bare Hug, £5.99 is a beige-purple shade that plays on lavender the right way.
Pair pastels in the edgiest way with a geometry-inspired nail art look. It might not be noticeable until you’re up close, but it elevates a modern manicure into something more intricate – plus, the soft contrast between the two hues is bound to grab attention.
Pick a favourite pastel. Paint the lightest colour first, let it dry and then apply tape to cover half the nail - we love this half-moon shape, but get creative. Next, add the pastel to create another layer of colour on the exposed area. Give it more drying time, then top off with a top coat.
Add an ombre
This beloved Tumblr-trend is also the easiest DIY ever – especially if you have trouble picking just the one colour. The only tricky part is narrowing it down to the shades you love best. Take five of your favourite pastel nail polishes and arrange them from darkest to lightest. Then paint each nail from thumb to little finger in a different colour, in a pastel-gradient rainbow. There you have it – instant nail art.
