Your biggest mascara questions - answered

Mascara. You sweep it on your lashes and forget about it, so it should be simple, right? But the reality is, with the huge range of lash-darkening formulas out there, it can get confusing. We took a look at your most pressing mascara questions and decided we’d help you out.

1. WHICH MASCARA IS BEST FOR ADDING VOLUME?

You’re after full, luscious eyelashes, but don’t want to put up with clumps. Yes, it is possible – just check out , £6.99, which has a specially-designed brush to ensure that your lashes stay clump free while delivering on bold, black volume. And with its extreme wear formula you don’t have to worry about it flaking off mid-afternoon.

2. HOW MANY COATS OF MASCARA SHOULD I USE?

It’s not so much the number of coats; it’s how you apply. To make sure you’re getting maximum volume from your mascara, place the wand at the base of your lashes and wiggle to deposit most of the product before sweeping out the full length of your lashes. If you think you need another coat, simply repeat.

3. HOW OFTEN SHOULD I REPLACE MY MASCARA?

Every three months. This will keep the formula looking and feeling fresh.

4. WHY IS MY MASCARA DRYING OUT?

You might have had it for too long (see point 3), or too much air could be getting into the tube. Always screw the lid on tight and when using your mascara, don’t pump the wand in and out as this allows air to get in, drying the formula. If you’re having a clumpy mascara emergency, then put your closed tube of mascara in hot water for a few minutes to loosen it up before applying. And then get yourself to the shops to stock up on Scandaleyes Reloaded, £6.99, of course.
